Many years ago I attended a family “Gospel-singing” inspiration night. Song after song was filled with a declaration of praise to God and the building was filled with excellent and praiseworthy chords. Still, as lovely as the music was, nothing was so sweet or inspiring to me as when the two youngest brothers in the family began to recite Scripture back and forth from A to Z.
Challenged and inspired by this deliberate and basic Bible memory system, I went home and immediately began to work on my own spiritual alphabet. I’ve found that this simple but systematic system containing 26 verses can be worked on anywhere and at any time. Contained in this alphabet is the means to godly edification and exhortation for my own life and for the lives of others. Once the alphabet is complete I simply move on to a “new” 26 verses.
Here’s a look:
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquities of us all.
 Isaiah 53:6
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Matt.6:33
Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not. Jer. 33:3
Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Ps.37:4
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. James 1:17
For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Ps.46:1
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almgihty. Ps.91:1
In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins; according to the riches of his grace. Eph.1:7
Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne; mercy and truth shall go before thy face. Ps.89:14
Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
2 Peter 1:20
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal. Matt.6:19
Mark the perfect man and behold the upright for the end of that man is peace. Ps.37:37
Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that worketh in us. Eph.3:20
Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law. Ps.119:18
Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 2 Timothy 4:2
Quench not the Spirit. 1 Thess.5:19
Rejoice evermore. 1 Thess.5:16
So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereunto I sent it.
Isaiah 55:11
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. Prov.3:5
Unto thee lift I up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens. Ps.123:1
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on Me hath everlasting life. John 6:47
While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
2 Cor.4:18
Exalt ye the Lord our God and worship at his footstool for He is holy. Ps.99:5
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Ps.23:4
Zion heard and was glad; and the daughters of Judah rejoiced because of thy judgments O Lord. Ps.97:8
Mmmm ...
Absolutely beautiful.
While there are many renditions of the alphabet hidden in my heart, this one remains my personal favorite. My goal is to know my spiritual A,B,C’s and recount them as often as possible. This is an intentional, worthy and empowering endeavor and I never cease to be blessed by it.
If you are looking for a deliberate and simple approach to Bible memory, this may be an excellent and praiseworthy investment for you.
God bless and grant you a special portion of His word.
