FIVE STONES + A ROCKBy: Darrelyn L. Tutt
"And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand, and he drew near to the Philistine ...Then said David to the Philistine, 'Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield; but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of Hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. This day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord's, and He will give you into our hands."1 Samuel 17:40,45-47------Energy, zeal, and emphatic confidence preceded David into his battle with Goliath and the Philistines.Undeterred by sloppy, salted, arrogant words, and the size of a giant,David took a step forward, leaned into his adversary, and whispered the secret that would garner his success.Listen closely:"Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield; but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of Hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. This day the Lord will deliver thee into mine hand ..."David's disposition was charged with security in God.David's position was steadfastly anchored, not to the slingshot and stones he'd selected,But to the ROCK he'd selected.Of Him, David was sure.Because of Him, David knew the victory was already his.David not only held his ground; He took back ground. With a weighty wondrous knowledge in God's might and strength, David allowed God's power to flow through him and God's power prevailed.Israel was secured victory and restored her land.-----The ROCK held true. The ROCK held fast. The ROCK is Jesus Christ. The man who moves ardently and confidently into battle, charged with a confidence in the Lord and His word, shall most certainly prevail. The arrogance of the "Goliath" will eventually hang on the palace wall, indicative of yet another conquered foe; a solid reminder that the Lion of Judah is faithful and, with Him, there is no formidable match. Those who do battle in the name of the Lord are destined, determined, and sealed for victory. The miracle in the story of "David and Goliath" has little to do with a sling and five stones, and everything to do ... with the ROCK.Look to Him and be saved.-------Three Study Considerations:1) Look to David's example: Gather your stones ... but rely on the Rock. You'll emerge with the confidence of David.-----2) Meditate on 1 Samuel 17 today. Share David's intimate experience of God with him ... and then gather five stones in remembrance.------3) Assert your position in Christ and your disposition will be dramatically altered. The battle belongs to the Lord.FIVE STONES + A ROCK.-------
