MAY 5 - Proverbs 5:21 & Luke 12:16-21
By: Darrelyn L. Tutt

"For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord, and He pondereth all his goings."
Proverbs 5:21
The Certain Rich Man
"And He spake a parable unto them, saying, 'The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: And he thought within himself saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods  laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee; then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."
Luke 12:16-21
"Ever remember, that though secret sins may escape the eyes of our fellow-creatures, yet a man's ways are before the eyes of the Lord, who not only sees, but ponders all his goings. Those who are so foolish as to choose the way of sin, are justly left of God to themselves, to go on in the way of destruction."  -Matthew Henry
Self is a very empty vessel to try and satisy; it never has enough and always desires more. The wealthy individual, in today's parable, was consumed in the privacy of his own thoughts with "self." Creating a mental scenario composed entirely of self-gratification, his thoughts turn to his retirement years and how he wants to spend them:
Bigger and better barns ... which would contribute to bigger and better years.
Life is sounding luxeriously wonderful and the future is looking very promising ...
but for one thing:
God is not impressed.
The thoughts, words, intentions, and plans of man are studied, sought out, pondered, observed, and even known ... before a man even has them.
God is in control, my friend.
He knows every little public, private thing about you ... and He still loves you!
Stop trying to put together a life that you don't possess control over;
Give yourself over to the God who made you ... and ask Him to do something with you that will bear fruit for eternity.
Quit making life about "you" and subject yourself to the One who chose to make you.
Get your ducks in a row and get your relational, mental, emotional, physical, and financial accounts in order with the One who created order.
Get things right with God.
Start there.
Stay there.
End there.
*And hang out with those who help you remain there.
O God, forgive us for the sense of entitlement we carry about ourselves. Forgive us for dim eyes, short term plans, and little pictures that don't involve You. Forgive us for thoughtless living and self-centered thinking. We ask You as Father, Supplier, Sustainer, and Provider to show us what to do with the resources You have blessed us with.
How would "You" best be glorified through what we have?
How could we most please You and honor You, God, with what You have so generously chosen to give us?
Let this day be lived with eternity in mind and an awareness of Your watchful eye upon each area of our lives.
You are this day ... our daily bread.
1) Is God asking me to give something up?
2) What am I clinging to that has no eternal value?
3) God, would you lay someone on my heart that needs something that I have to give?
*Be as prompt as possible in your response to #3 and don't give yourself time to be talked out of it.
