Proverbs 4

Sometimes I think that getting the wisdom and insight is not always the hard part - sometimes it is knowing what to do with them.

The directive here is to go and get these things, but it is immediately followed by a warning of sorts - "do not turn away from the words of my mouth".

It seems we serve a God who understands and encourages our pursuits of truth and knowledge, and yet who also acknowledges that the more we learn, and know, and grow, the more tempted we may become to turn away from his commands.

As a 7th Grade teacher, I am surrounded by dozens of pre-teen / early teen students who are entering the stage of "knowing everything". I often am left shaking my head in disbelief as I watch them sort through a new-found disdain for rules and authority, choosing instead to trust in their own knowledge and skills, which all to often are still lacking.
