The greatest discoveries ever made,
The greatest riches ever afforded,
The greatest achievements ever enjoyed,
The greatest intimacy with Christ ever experienced,
And the greatest joys ever known have one interesting commonality:
Pain has been the forerunner to each beautiful and lasting thing my soul has ever known. It has been the common denominator of all that my soul holds dearest and the chief catalyst to growth and developed character.
Pain - a distressing stimuli or something which incites the sensation of suffering or distress.
Hmmm ...
Pain is the unpleasant thing which we try to avoid at all costs but which precipitates wisdom, discernment, compassion, empathy, and above all,
Intimacy with Christ and man.
Pain is the narrow bridge leading us from apathy into intimacy,
Leading us out of the shallows and into the deep,
Steering us out of the hollow shadows and into the holy realities of Christ and communion with Him.
Pain has the power to lead us into perfect fellowship with God and man.
It has the power to fortifify us with new sensations, create greater sensory skills, and grant a more acclimated empathy and understanding of others passing through it.
Pain is the upward unrelenting climb of an "Everest."
Few people arrive at the top because they neglect to see the value of the vision that awaits them.
Few people get to the top because they succumb to lower oxygen intake, more labored breathing, greater difficulty ascending, and lesser people on the journey.
They turn around, they head back down, and they succumb to what looks most to them, the easier way.
And they take it,
And company separates.
Hmmm ...
But God's word whispers secrets to us all along the way about things like pain, suffering, tribulation, testing, and trial that we must face.
God tells us not to run from it, be afraid of it, or distance ourselves from it but to welcome it, invite it, and learn from it.
In the midst of pain ... God is there.
Pain is a game-changer and a life-changer.
Pain leads us to places and spaces reserved for the soul and God while intersecting us with those submitting themselves to the same.
And this is what makes pain the beautiful place.
Three truths:
1) And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given us.
Romans 5:3-5
2) My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
James 1:2-4
3) That I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being made conformable unto His death.
Philippians 3:9-10
Many of you on this journey with me are learning that truth (both telling it and living it) has the power to trigger the greatest pain while unleashing the greatest power.
It's a holy wonder ... is it not?
And the hardest things bridge us to the most beautiful things and we are changed.
Take your next breath,
Take your next step.
Pain is gain ...
Into a whole new terrain of intimacy and growth with the Savior.
