Red Herring – A diversion intended to distract attention from the real issue.
Webster’s Dictionary (1961)
The term “red herring” is frequently used with an inference to a centuries-old dog training technique. When a dog was being trained in a specialized arena such as hunting (foxes and pheasants), policing (criminals and cadavers), or working with the disabled (visually or physically impaired), he had to undergo a series of tests pertaining to the keen sensory organ called smell which he was so naturally adept at.  He had to learn how to keep his nose on the job and avoid being distracted by tempting but irrelevant aromas.
A smoked fish, called a red herring, would be dragged down an opposing path away from the one which the dog was to keep to, in an effort to distract him from his work and disrupt him from needed service.
If the dog followed the deceptive scent of the red herring, he wasn’t deemed properly “work ready.”
If, however, he could overcome the scented distraction of the red herring and move toward the relevant need, he was deemed ready for action.
Satan utilizes the “red herring” strategy with frequency and has great success with it.
With the techniques of a seasoned veteran he employs “red herring” tactics that distract and detract the most mature of believers … all in an effort to dissuade him from the greater work of the Gospel.
Through numerous vices he utilizes a host of resources (money, people, desires, pleasures and treasures) to distract God’s elect and entice in an opposing direction.
He seeks to distract you.
He is good at what he does … but God is greater.
Christ the Creator defeats the unrelenting deviator (Satan) again and again. Victory is an assured promise and not a questionable possibility for His own.
Whatever “red herring” has been employed to distract you, my friend, from your calling ... be assured that Christ has the power to keep you holy, pure, and well-guided. He is utterly trustworthy and He will keep you to the end. Stay close to Him.
Keep to the path God has you on and pray for wisdom to discern the scent and misdirection of the “red herring.”
God's blessing and truth on your journey.
“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”
1 Corinthians 10:13
