Red Herring – A diversion intended to distract attention from the real issue.
Webster’s Dictionary (1961)
The term “red herring” is frequently used with an inference to a centuries-old dog training technique.
When a dog was being trained in a specialized arena such as hunting (foxes and pheasants), policing (criminals and cadavers), or working with the disabled (visually or physically impaired), he had to undergo a series of tests pertaining to the keen sensory organ, called smell, which he was so naturally adept at. He had to learn how to keep his nose on the job and avoid being distracted by tempting but irrelevant aromas.
A smoked fish, called a red herring, would be dragged directly in front of him to assess his readiness for work. If the dog followed the strong tantalizing scent of the red herring, he wasn’t deemed properly “work ready.” If, however, he could overcome the scented temptation of the red herring and move toward the relevant need beyond, he was deemed ready for action.
Hmmm ...
Satan utilizes the “red herring” strategy with frequency and has great success with it. With the techniques of a seasoned veteran he employs “red herring scents” that tantalize and suggest fulfillment to the most mature of believers … all in an effort to dissuade him from the greater work of the Gospel. Through numerous vices ranging from money, to pleasure, to earthly treasure, he seeks to distract God’s elect.
He seeks to distract you and me.
He is good at what he does … but God is greater.
Christ the Creator defeats the unrelenting deviator, Satan, again and again.
Utilizing His blood,
His Word,
and His Spirit,
He delivers the pure fragrance of truth and grace in timely ways ... to His own.
Victory is an assured promise and not a question of possibility.
The scent of Christ will always be stronger than the scent of the red herring ... even when we are led astray and our "noses" take us elsewhere.
Whatever “red herring” is placed before you, my friend, be assured that there is something far greater, beyond, that makes it work foregoing any scent being transmitted temporarily to your senses.
Keep to the path God has you on and pray for wisdom to discern the “red herring.”
If you have yielded to the "red herring", confess it, and entrust God to utilize it in helping others pick up the scent.
God works in a myriad of ways ...
He is not afraid, threatened, or thrown off by Satan's tactics.
For every "red herring" moment,
There's a "truth bearing" grace ...
And God will use all for His glory.

“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”
1 Corinthians 10:13
