THE ROPE

THE ROPE
By: Darrelyn L. Tutt

Eighth grade.
Physical Education.
Teacher: Mr.Ellenson.
Heavy thick rope,
Secured to ceiling,
Knotted bottom.
Awaits ascension.
~~~
Athletic Mr. Ellenson
Shimmies to top;
Hand over hand.
Legs effortlessly
Encircling,
Engaging,
Embarking upward.
Quick climb.
Shrill whistle.
Stern warning:
“DO NOT SLIDE DOWN THE ROPE.
Hand over hand.
Motions slow.
Don’t let go.”
Smoothly
Shimmies down.
Hits the ground.
Exits with ease.
~~~
Christopher:
Class jerk
Class jock.
Big mouth,
Big talk.
Whispers …
“Ellenson’s a wimp.
Don’t hurt to slide down,
Fly down,
Hit ground.
Watch me.”
Rising jock,
Raises hand,
Up to stand,
Steadily climbs.
Hand over hand,
Legs intertwined ....
Arrogance climbs,
Ascends with ease.
~~~
Daring stare,
Not a care,
Hands release … let go.
Moving,
Proving,
Teacher … doesn’t know.
Jumps the knot,
Hits the ground.
Tears are streaming,
Head is down.
And jock …
Is feeling pain.
~~~
Room is still.
And teacher shakes
His head.
Lesson learned,
And someone’s hands
Are red.
Raw and stinging …
Pride has been removed.
Teacher made
A point
And it was proved.

~~~
Teacher and the Jock
Both walk away.
Teacher looks at hands,
and
Makes okay.
Hands are washed and treated.
Several days
It is repeated.
And lesson learned
By everyone …
That day.
~~~
God appoints
A standard
For our lives.
He knows,
He tells the truth …
He never lies.
Listen to His word
And You will find;
The truth was made
To give you …
Peace of mind.
~~~
If your hands release
And you let go;
God will wash your hands
And you will know …
He loves you even yet
The hands that bled
Do not forget …
That you’re His child
And He will never …
Let you go.
~~~
“See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands;
Your walls are continually before Me.”
Isaiah 49:16
