Endorphins - Any of a group of hormones secreted within the brain and nervous system and having a number of physiological functions. They are peptides that activate the body's opiate receptors, causing an analgesic effect.
Hmmm ...
That's sort of helpful and sort of not;
Informative but a bit too sterile and clinical for my liking.
I've located three interesting factoids about Endorphins:
1) The word "endorphin" is a combination of the words "endogenou" (produced inside of the body) and "morphine" (an analgesic and narcotic drug obtained from opium and used to relieve pain or produce a 'high' of some sort.)
Medicines and drugs such as codeine and morphine produce an intensified "endorphined response" within the body.
2) Endorphins act as the body's natural analgesic and wield a power to diminish a perception of pain and create a "feel good" sensation in the body.
Prolonged continued exercise generally produces and releases heightened levels of endorphins, hence, the "runner's high."
Woohoo on this familiar one!
3) Every individual has a different level of endorphines which affect the way we deal with pain, pleasure, and the every day stimuli surrounding us.
Activities which might lead to an increase in endorphines:
-Intensive exercise
-Certain foods such as chocolate and chili peppers
-Acupuncture and massage therapy
With these little factoids in mind it seems sensible to suggest that raising the level of endorphines through a healthy concrete practice is not a bad idea.
High levels of endorphines create high levels of euphoria.
Low levels of endorphines create low levels of euphoria.
Hmmm ...
God's creation of the body is a wondrous mystery.
Its ability to cycle through painful and pleasurable stimuli is truly remarkable but so is the reality that God created endorphines like he created everything else on earth:
With a temporary and unsustained ability to provide lasting relief to man's internal and external issues.
God gives us seasons and bouts of glorious relief and release from the ills on earth but He doesn't allow them the power to provide a lasting euphoria.
God did not choose "endorphine overdose" as a means of salvation;
He chose Jesus.
Jesus is the only vital long-lasting Sustainer to man's internal and external ills, and when He is rightly in placed in our lives, everything falls into place in our lives and becomes situated around Him.
When Christ becomes man's supreme "Endorphin" he is situated for lasting and eternal satisfaction and life on earth proves purposeful and meaningful because of Him.
In such an individual:
-Christ's blood will flow freely and steadily.
-Christ's Spirit will abide and provide comfort, companionship, and every needed form of communion with the Father.
-God's word will sustain and offer wisdom, protection, and direction to every individual who seeks Him in it.
Christ is man's only true endorphin.
Look to Him.
"... I am come that they might have life, and they might have it more abundantly."
John 10:10
